There’s a commercial for a mens clothing store in New York that says “An informed consumer is our best customer.” This is true for people who have potential medical malpractice and injury cases. From the moment the phone rings until we’ve finished their case, the most important aspect of my job is to inform you, the client, whether you have the basis to bring a lawsuit, what your chances for obtaining money are, and to give you the best legal advice possible.
There are two sides to this coin: your lawyer has made mistakes that are his fault, or your lawyer has not done anything wrong. One common complain in disability law is how fast the process goes. Denials are common, but not the end of the process for earning disability. In other words, it takes time to get benefits like Social Security Disability. Your lawyer has no control over how fast the system decides on your case.
Do not pick out a bankruptcy lawyer at the last minute. Be sure to do some advance planning and research. Otherwise, if you pick a lawyer at the last minute you could end up with a ouverture succession notaire who is not experienced in the area you need or whom you do not feel comfortable working with.
One woman’s tale of woe especially comes to mind. Around the office, we call her story “The Tale of the Nine Year Divorce.” She had hired an attorney to defend a divorce action here in Virginia and to counter sue for divorce. She was living out of state at the time and paid the attorney a significant retainer. There was no written contract. The lawyer she had chosen seemed to be afraid of the opposing counsel and did nothing to move the case forward. In fact, the lawyer allowed the case to be dismissed from the court docket for inaction.
QUESTIONS-She could have asked the lawyer how he charges and how much he would estimate the case would cost. She could have asked if he had experience with opposing counsel and if he was afraid of her or if he felt confident he could handle the case, despite opposing counsel. She could have asked what to expect and she could have asked about the procedure in a contested Virginia divorce.
Once you gather your information, you want weigh the costs versus the services. Each lawyer charges for different things. Some charge by the minute; some charge by 8th of the hour. You want to know if the lawyer charges for postage or hand-delivering documents. Do not forget that this is additional to the court fees. You want a lawyer who you feel comfortable with, who listens to your needs, and communicates well. Remember this person needs to represents your interests to the best of his or her ability. The cost he or she charges does not accurately reflect the service you are going to receive. For example, you can go with the biggest named law firm and have the worse lawyer on your team.
The audience- The lawyer has to consider the audience while chalking out his plan. The audience holds a prime position in lawyer marketing. He should reach out to the people through television ads, search engines or by targeting a particular type of audience.
A good lawyer is hard to find and, in most cases, a hard lawyer is good to find. Ensure you get the best by taking the time to find the right person, one who ticks all the boxes and has the right qualifications, as well as the right personality.
